Has anyone else noticed that the winners are almost NEVER ethnic women? Many Latinas/Hispanic women win, but they are always hispanics that LOOK white, never dark-skinned Latinas. Asians don't often win, and Africans rarely even qualify for the top ten! It just seems sad that dark-skinned or ethnic women are put down.

What do you think?

alittlebitviscous: I am not saying that everyone is racist, however, I DO think the judges should have knowledge of beauty worldwide or at least make the judges people from various parts of the world.

I mean, last year, when Miss Ethiopia made it into the top 20, the commentators said, "Wow, this one's a surprise!" Miss Ethiopia looked VERY Ethiopian, and beautiful, but that comment was inappropriate, I think.

whitebeauty: It's just a question. I thought of it, and just decided to ask. It's not something I worry about everyday! Anyway, I doubt you're out there saving the world!

You could be right. most beauty queens, sex symbols, etc. have light skin, even when they're "black." take halle berry, for instance: she's black, but there are people a lot darker-skinned than she is and I can't recall any recognized as beauty-queens. this is the legacy left over from slavery. amazing how penetrating and unephemeral it is!

Sorry if this might offend some people, but to some people like me, I think light skinned women are more attractive than black women. But I have nothing against black women, so I'm guessing maybe some of those judges like lighter skin women better? I'm not sure if being lighter skin is more appealing to some is considered racist, just naturally inclined to lighter skin women.

Basicly what it comes down to tin Miss Universe is looking for a model type girl you either fit the mold or you don't. If you don't fit the mold your out before it starts. The European country can afford to spend more money on there contestant and get her the best walking and talking coaches on the market. They also can afford light surgical precdures to help there contestant be the best.

Well, this is an important question. With all the B.S. going on in the world, the Miss Universe Pageant judge's decisions being somehow suspect rank right up there with global warming and inner-city crime. In fact, here is my top five:
1) Impending war with Iran
2) Credibility issues with the Miss Universe Pageant
3) U. S. Senate passing new laws restricting free speech
4) Hillary running for President
5) With or without wings

Thanks for pointing out this grave injustice. I will e-mail my Senator right away.

Well, if there were more black women in pageants, then maybe they would win more often. They're outnumbered by white women in pageants though, so it's not surprising that mostly white women win. More black women should enter these pageants though if you want to see them win more often. Are they racist though? No. They'd be racist if they disallowed ethnic women from entering the pageants.

seems extraordinary to call it omit Universe. I observed no contestants from Mars or Venus, or the Asteroids. call could be omit Earth or omit international Congrats to her for the win. Mexico is a proud united states

You'd be suprised how badly the international market wants to see an ethnic beauty queen. It's not about race. It's about training and preparation. African and Asian countries are nowhere near the standard set by the developed countries who spend months and years preparing their girls. The 'white' hispanic women from Venezuela for example have been groomed since childhood and even undergo countless cosmetic surgery to achieve 'perfection'. When it comes to pageants, most African and Asian countries are still amateurs. I am from Asia but that's what I think is the reason behind the lack of ethnic beauty queens. They aren't put down, they don't match up yet truthfully..

Don't African Americans have their own pageants. Not that they shouldn't be included in the Miss Universe Pageant, but think what would happen if they tried to have, say, a Caucasion Miss USA Pageant. That wouldn't go over too well.

There is not such thing as "hispanic that LOOK white". They're simply white. They're simply white. I feel comfortable to call you racist, ignorant and prejudicial cause you think that hispanic is a race and tries to deny white hispanics their European heritage.

You may be right, but few years back a lot of Indian gals were crowned Miss World and Miss Uni, so this may be true but not 100%.
