If I can throw about 65-68 on flat ground, is that good for a 16 year old?
How fast would you expect me to be able to throw off a mound?
Any ideas on how to increase my pitch speed?

Thanks for the answers guys!
All are appreciated, by the way-
I have never pitched before in my life, I don't even know how to throw a fastball the proper way, so if i learned it the proper way, shouldnt i be able to throw around 75?
and when i say 65-68, its off flat ground without warming up, and I am naturally pretty accurate, Im just curious to know if i should try and learn pitches and tryout for baseball this coming season?

That's a good speed but not exceptional. Some kids can throw in the low 80's at that age. Work on your lower leg muscles and strengthen you lower back. These are the keys to gaining speed and endurance. Remember that pitching is about the change of speed and the deception in arm speed (ie making your arm look the same no matter what pitch you are throwing). It might be time to develop an off-speed pitch and practice in front of a long mirror on how you can keep your arm in the same position with each pitch. Look at pitchers like Pedro Martinez, Greg Maddox etc....They are not exceptional speed pitchers but make outs on how they can deceive the batter.

Good luck.

Unfortunately, if you are still at that speed at age 16 you are never going to be a fireballer. The best way to increase arm strength is playing long toss. If this isnt an option (no partner, or snow on the ground), try this, get six or seven feet of surgical tubing, drill a hole through the middle of a baseball, and feed the tubing through the hole and tie the two loose ends together. Now you have a device you can use to strengthen your arm while inside. Simply loop the free end around some sturdy object that is about the height of the ball when it passes over your shoulder (a bunkbed works great) and simulate your throwing motion.

Well thats good but I pitch for my HS and I am the same age and me and our other 2 pitcher can all throw about 75-80 off the mound but right now you would probably be probably be throwing 70-72 off a mound. Good Luck

Buld up your legs, thats how you generate power behind your fast ball. Take Mark Prior as an example.

You shouldn't be too concerned with pitch speed especially as you get to the Varsity level. It wont matter how fast you throw, you'll get rocked if you just have a fast ball. A fast ball is the easiest pitch to locate.

Develop a good changeup along with your fast ball, and practice your location, and you'll have success.

Just think of the name Greg Maddux.

A lot of great answers here. All i can add is not to worry about your velocity. Keep working on strengthening your legs , buttocks and midsection, Always work on good mechanics, and don't try to overthrow to get more velocity. That could lead to strain and ligament problems. Remember that velocity is not everything. It is more important to be able to locate your pitches and have a good change up. Good luck and keep up the hard work!

your strength in your arm will come with age. You are still young. Continue everything you are doing now because thats pretty good speed for your age. By the time you are 19, you could be in the high 80's-low 90's. Dont abuse your arm. Look what happened to Kerry Wood and Mark Prior of the Chicaco Cubs. Their arms were overworked and abused.

You throw faster then me and I'm 18.if you want to increase pitch speed then practicing is the best way.But don't practice too much or you'll defeat the purpose of your goal. You could take steroids that would probably help but highly don't recommend it because its very dangerous and can ruin your body physically big time.

By throwing every day and doing your legwork.

But speed doesn't mean a thing. You need control, and control of every one of the pitches that you will begin to develop a couple of years from now.

enhance your decrease physique and middle. artwork on mechanics, sturdy mechanics can help enhance speed together as damaging mechanics can shrink it. Do rotator cuff workouts and throw. you in addition to mght want to stretch your shoulder and arm in lots of situations. you like the flexibility to rather create the whip action you ought to have super speed. To KB have you ever seen Lincecum pitch. His stride isn't longer than his top. Too long of a stride makes you ought to open the front area early which kills your speed. in the adventure that your stride is only too long you ought to no longer be in place to apply each and every thing you have. you do no longer deliver your arm up late you get it to that c ocked place while your front foot plant life. You do throw against your front leg which makes the lower back hip open up greater explosively so i will provide you that one. Yeah mechanics help yet so does explosive potential. you ought to coach to get that. wealthy Harden throws greater stable than Tim Lincecum and further speed by skill of having greater ideal coupled with sturdy mechanics. this is all relative. no longer something will advance your speed in the adventure that your mechanics suck in case you have sturdy mechanics without the potential and potential you will no longer have the speed. Lincecum could be smaller than quite some pitchers yet he only must be reliable adequate and explosive adequate for his physique. Watch maximum substantial leaguers heat up they use long toss to loosen their palms up until eventually now video games. they do no longer only circulate to the mound and start up firing. Even the classes to get their palms waiting to start throwing in the preseason use long toss. this is people attempting to make a greenback. there's no person thank you to construct speed and that's a mix of issues that help build speed.

Not too bad but for MLB you need to be at least in the mid 80's to low 90's.
