Biology has a lot to do with it, but also culture and upbringing. Newborn babies stare at attractive faces longer and there are universals to beauty, such as symmetry. at the neurochemical level, dopamine is released when looking at attractive people, similar to what happens when someone takes cocaine, but not nearly as addictive, thankfully.
Oh, one more thing: in many movies, including practically every Disney feature, attractive people are the heroes, and the ugly the villains. this certainly doesn't help!

People don't generally like or dislike either of the people, thats a weird question to really ask. People would rather date people they're attracted too, then ones that are unattractive to them.
Personally, I think its hogwash.

Not so obvious. It's to do with the mating instinct biologically programmed into us. People always try to mate with the most attractive person available, and this feeds into our likes and dislikes

Um, unfortunately I think it's in our DNA. The standard answer is that features we humans find "attractive" (symmetry in facial features, bright eyes, clear skin, shiny hair, a certain waist-to-hip ratio in women etc.) correlate with our ability to produce healthy offspring. Obviously, this isn't always the case, so good thing we humans also have sharp minds and compassionate hearts...we can get past our first impressions and get to know the beauty within!

It's not obvious and not true for any person with an ounce of depth to them. I treat people equally, I don't care what they look like. I look at the person inside.
Remember looks fade, but a person who is beautiful inside will always be that way.

I don't know I guess because that person thinks they look so good that there to good to be friends with some one "unattractive" or because they think they look like they might be dirty or something...but I really don't know

they catch their attention and they need someone that will always do that. or at least have people think "damn they must be doing something good to get someone like that"
