I miss the feeling of being at grandmas house. The muffled voices coming from the other room where the grownups were conversing over coffee in the mornings when I first woke up. (we visited from out of town) The closeness of having relatives and family right there for anything I needed. Security.

I was going to say, "Not much. I'm having the time of my life now, in my forties, and I wouldn't go back for anything." Then I read your details about your grandmother's house and started feeling the same way. I miss the huge family gatherings from back when the family was young and healthy. We used to meet every Easter at the civil war battlefield in Perryville, Kentucky, and our extended family was large enough to fill the entire park. I miss those times. Just not a lot of the BS that came along with it.

I miss the unity and security of a loving and caring family. My mothers soft voice waking me up in the morning. My fathers shower running in the morning as he was getting ready for work. My siblings always being around. And my best friend Sassy the pug. But most of all I miss the sound of small feet running to and fro and the tender little hands caressing my face of my darling sons when they were little kids.

Sleeping over my grandpa's house. He was lots of fun. We'd go out to eat and he'd take me to the department store to meet his friends that worked there - the mannequins! It was hilarious! People would pass by and stare...I don't know how he kept a straight face! But he'd really play it up, the more concerned other shoppers looked, the more he'd get into it. Then we'd get hot chocolate and laugh about all the funny looks people gave us. It was great. He's been gone for a long time now...I really miss him!

The carefree, duty free, security. Holidays when all my Aunts and Uncles and cousins would all meet at my Grandmothers at Thanksgiving. The grownups would visit, and all the kids stayed outside and played all day long.

I miss having HUGE family gatherings! We had extended family growing up, but now everyone is gone and it seems people never have enough time anymore to have picnics, bbqs, dinner parties with EVERYONE over - all for no special reason - just to get together. Yeah, that's what I miss most.

I miss my dad sitting at the table with his hands around a cup of coffee. I miss riding my bike with my brother to go catch crawdads. I miss the joy of waving sparklers on the fourth of july.I miss falling asleep at night with no greater worry than how to spend my allowance.

I miss the feeling of my grandmother washing my hands in her sink with perfect warm water and ivory soap. Something about the feeling of love but I guess I did not understand it at 4 years old.

I miss playing outside in the summer and hearing the kids down the street yelling " ICE CREAM TRUCK!!!" then we'd all run in our parents house trying to get 50 cents before we missed it. Good times!!
