a computer virus are lines of computer code that wil download execution orders to you harddrive etc, these will then operate when computer is switched on, and can cause damage to your files allow access to others to your computer, or allow further programming to be downloaded without your knowledge.

a good pieceof safety advice is to read the whole file name of anything you asked to download, if it ends in ".exe" it is an execute file, and will be adding code into your start up programs etc. if you dont know what you are downloading, ask someone first to ensure its safety.

hope this helps

Virus is developed by programmers with a lot of immagination and good technical knowledge. Its easy to find also tools to develop easy virus files.

An Virus is made of two elements: Trigger(Head) and Body. One action trigger your virus (body) Both can exists in only one file or as a separeted events.

Virus can be developed into many different ways. C to the most difficult ones and some short/easy codes to easiests and avoidable virus.

Within latest Windows versions, SW like Outlook and IE Explorer usually do autolmatic isntall or execute files without ask to the computer owner (you can change it but it means less performance).
for example. I can create a PIF (old executable windows files and before PIF I will put .GIF as a Extension. Windows will show as a image and when try to eexecute, understand this image is and PIF and execute it without ask (I'm talking about old and overpassed procedure).

Best way to avoid:
Virus, Spyware, Addware is:
1. Always be sure about what are you installing within your computer; Do not install everything from internet always check sources
2. Have latest anti-virus SW (with virus database updated with regularity)
3. Firewall isntalled is also excelent to avoid it
4. Try to use Firefox (Web Browser) and ThurnderBird (Same as Outlook) Both will reduce virus possibilities, once great part of viroses are always made to run in Windows environment.

... If you are really afraid about if, consider option to change to MAC Os Tiger (Machintosh only) or some good linux version installed by an professional.

Virus can reduce your computer performance charging a lot of trash within computer's memory. once memory is overflow, your computer will block.
IP attacks through internet can do the same.

Virus can also exclude important files and or exclude system files and avoid an succesfull system reboot.

Keep everything updated and have an environment clone from your latest excelent version. If you face problems, erase everything and recover all data;
Have habbits to put all important files: Images, Docs, Xls within specific directory and do regular backups to avoid problems (copy wihtin a DVD is enough).
Like in real life, you must have discipline if you have an computer.

A small piece of coding that is downloaded without the knowledge of the owner that runs programs in the background that can corrupt or delete vital system files. Prevention is better than cure. Go to www.prevx.com, download the software which is free for 28 days and be amazed. I use this and have removed Norton AV and Zone Alarm as this seems to work far better.

this anti-viruses is for nobbies users, which don't know how to organize files, don't know what programs to install and don't have any idea of where files came from "files' sources"...
