Here's a way to remember the difference between the two:

INTER = Between
INTRA = Within

Internet is a connection between networks; whereas intranet is a connection within a network, i.e., a workplace computers use their 'intranet' , a network system within their company.

An intranet, if you notice, has the prefix intra which means internal, the Internet has the prefix inter which means external. So an intranet would be an internal network for example 3 computers in your house that are connected to each other and you could tranfer files among them even if you they had no internet conection. To be part of an intranet the computers don't necesarily need to be in the same physical location though, you could have one computer in Texas and 2 in Chicago and still have them be part of the same intranet or private network. The webpages and files available through the intranet are usually not availble or visible throught the internet and only people with access and credentials to join the intranet can join the network and access them. The internet on the other hand, is a huge public network that you can use to transfer files, download stuff and visit webpages, you used it to visit this webpage and post this question and I am using it right now to answer it. There is nothing private about the internet and there is only one internet everyone can join (well there is also internet 2 - but that is more for research and stuff like that). There are many intranets though. From small private home networks to huge compay networks around the world. Hope that helped.

The Internet is basically the World Wide Web. An intranet works within a company or business's own computer network/system. You'll find an example in the link below.

An intranet is a private computer network that uses Internet protocols, network connectivity, and possibly the public telecommunication system to securely share part of an organization's information or operations with its employees. Sometimes the term refers only to the most visible service, the internal website. The same concepts and technologies of the Internet such as clients and servers running on the Internet protocol suite are used to build an intranet. HTTP and other Internet protocols are commonly used as well, especially FTP and e-mail. There is often an attempt to use Internet technologies to provide new interfaces with corporate 'legacy' data and information systems.

Briefly, an intranet can be understood as "a private version of the Internet", or as a version of the internet confined to an organization.

The Internet is the worldwide, publicly accessible network of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol (IP). It is a "network of networks" that consists of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks, which together carry various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, file transfer, and the interlinked Web pages and other documents of the World Wide Web.
