Because we can also feel compassion and empathy, so if you either did something to someone else, or feel responsible for someones elses well being, that experienced something you would yourself find upsetting you will feel guilty.

sensation of guilt in humans has all the qualities of morality in God.
It is this that keeps the world in sane and livable way.

What is sensation of guilt in us humans " is it not a feeling that some thing is wrong by our own standards" So how can it be unwarranted ? as it is all only inside us!!!

Because of the morals and beliefs that are inbedded into us from our upbringing, pop culture, media, friends, school system, etc. Somewhere along the way, something has been placed into our subconscious to make us feel that way. Whether we want to or not
