The series started off in Hawaii, where everyone got on skippers boat to take there tour around the island.

The Howells & Ginger are rich so they have lots $$$$$, The Howells own basicly the whole U.S. it seemed, so they would pack 45,000 pairs of clothes, just to go for a weekend, or in there case a vacation. Ginger was a big time movie star so she was raking in alot of dough so she was able to afford 58,000 pairs of clothes.

In the end they both where rich so they would have those many outfits on the island.

too bad it only lasted for 3 years 1964-1967

i would gone for 1964-1971

And if he could build all those gadgets, why couldn't the professor fix a lousy 3 foot hole in a boat? And why oh why didn't they just keep Gilligan in a locked hut since he ALWAYS screwed up them getting home? Personally, I would have fed him to the sharks the first time, or at least the second.

all that extra luggage was called "plot luggage" as in, there would not have been much of a plot if the luggage hadn't been on board.
for instance skipper and gilligan could not have put on a fashion show if they didnt have it.
of course you could also argue intellectually that the producers and writers were making a deep philosohicla statement to show that though they were wealthy and famous, the 3 of them had everything, but it was really useless in the end. from this perspective we could see gilligan as a christ figure, and the professor as ...ahhh nevermind, it was jsut part of a silly show

They're rich. Makes you wonder what they're doing on a charter boat anyways but Gilligan's island rarely 100% sensible. Rich people tend to take a lot of things with them.

More intriguing, why did Mary Ann have a change of clothes? An eccentric millionaire and a vain movie star, maybe, but how did Mary Ann come to take a tour boat ride with luggage?

Another option could be much simpler: The Howells and Ginger took the 3-Hour tour to kill time for their check-in time. Think of it: there's a check-in time for hotels. It could be possible that they took the three hour tour with their luggage in order to pass the time before they could check in. And fate threw a wrench into their clockwork, leading to them being on the island and they happen to be lucky to have more than enough change of clothes.

And if the professor could build almost ANYTHING out of coconuts and vines, why couldn't he think of a way to get off the island?

Plus, they probably had enough wood on the island to make another boat.

Plot holes, my friend, plot holes.
