When my son come home from the school Fridai, he bring back the failing grade for test in mathematics in the pre algebre. He is senior in the high school, end he say he get strait E's and F's. He tell me E is for exelent end F is fantastik. I em disappoint in him when he bring test that say 0 on it, but I also cant solve eny of the problems. Some of problem say.

(1) If x+2y-x+3y is equal to 10 cents, what is the value of x in dollars?

(2) Mike is twice as old as Colin. In 3 years, he is still twice as old as Colin. How old is Mike?

(3) An electric train moves west at 90 mph into an east wind at 40 knots. What direction will the smoke blow?

(4) A pool is 9x30x12 feet. If 8 liters can drain per hour, at what point in time will ice be able to form in the pool given that the outside temperature is -500 degrees F?

(5) A box is twice as wide as it is high and three times its length. When creshed, how big will this box be?

Can anyone solve?

1) If x + 2y - x + 3y = 10, then this becomes 5y = 10. "x" can be whatever you want it to be, since it doesn't affect anything.

2) If he's twice as old as Colin, then in 3 years he can't still be twice Colin's age. Proof: if M and C are Mike and Colin's current ages, respectively, then M = 2C. In three years, Mike's age will be M+3 and Colin's will be C+3, so M+3 = 2(C+3). This means M+3 = 2C + 6, or M = 2C+3. Subtract the first equation from the second and you get 0=3. Thus at least one of the original premises is false.

3) This is a riddle, not a math problem. Electric trains don't have smoke stacks.

4) Given the nature of the problems so far, I'm suspecting this is a trick question too, and that "all water would be ice at -500 degrees F" is considered the correct answer. Or maybe it's "That's impossible because that would be below absolute zero". But even then, it's hardly a trick question because people who miss that still don't have anything to go on. It doesn't take into account whether or not there was any water in the pool to begin with, how much was there, and the fact that only a top layer of ice is formed in a pool, which insulates the water below.

5) "Creshed"? "Algebre"? "Fridai"? Are you sure it's just math class that you...er, I mean your son...is failing?

1. no solution

2. no solution (mike will no longer be twice old as colin in 3 years)

3. Since electric trains produce no smoke, then this question is by nature, unanswerable.

4. This is not answerable due to laws of nature(temperature cannot be lower than -459.67 degrees F.

5. If the box is made of a material that has no height (which is impossible) and the box is crushed to the floor, then the box will not be big anymore. In summary this question cannot be answered either.

This leads me to think that your son was tricked by his teacher with this exam.. all the answers have no solution. I think you should talk with the teacher of your son... he might be trying to fail your son in purpose

Personally this sounds like a trick test basically to see if the students are reading the questions closely. If you are having trouble helping your son with his homework then maybe he should stay after school and work with the teacher or a tutor. It probably wouldn't hurt to have him show you how to use spell check on the computer either. Also the English language is a hard language to learn and you could probably benefit from it

1: Huh?
2. Not enough information
3. There is no smoke because it's an electric train.
4. Not enough information
5. Not enough information

Don't get mad at your son. That test is pure garbage. Are you absolutely sure that's what the questions ask? If so, take it to the teacher and ask what's going on. This is pathetic.

are you that bored to try to have dumb people sit here and solve these questions and im sure they will except nuber 3 because an electric train runs off of deisel generators and electric moters unless you mean like a subway or skytran in that case is powerd by the track

E & F is failing.

How about arranging a Parent-Teacher conference? It may help you know how to better help your child. Asking for answers here is not going to help in the long run.

Sounds like homework, to me!

I can't blame your son for getting 0 on this...

these questions are impossible to be solved as they lack information.

This entire post is a sham because some of OPs other questions have very good English. I think, somebody is looking for attention tonight.
I really like this question of yours .... makes me wonder why you really asked.
