They may be for future use. But I believe it has to do with the growth and sex of a child in the womb. That is, early on becoming male or female. It is a good question though, because I do not believe male animals have nipples as female animals do. Except in the ape type families.

I can think of three possibilities, in order of likelihood of being true:
1) sex. for the human animal, sex is prolonged and a very pleasurable experience for both male and female.
2) evolution: maybe they were needed for something else in the past, but haven't disappeared yet, something called a vestigial trait.
3) male lactation. sounds odd and maybe this theory doesn't hold much water, but, in extreme circumstances(as starvation), men can lactate. The idea is that men can feed their young when their mother cannot in this type of situation.

females also start off with a penis that becomes a clitoris... crazy but true! but at some point in the womb, things go towards male or female.. isn't biology interesting?

Theres this theory that men can lactate(make milk) too. (Actually i think there was a study done to prove that men actually can lactate. Gross!)
