(3) An electric train moves west at 90 mph into an east wind at 40 knots. What direction will the smoke blow?

(1) x can be any amount of dollars and still make this equation true, as long as y = 2 cents or .02 dollars. So consider that chipping in my .02 dollars worth.
(2) This is impossible, unless Mike and Colin were never born and are age 0. So Mike is twice 0, or 0. And three years later, their ages are both 0 also.
(3) The smoke blows up the backside of whoever wrote these questions.
(4) At -500 degrees F, hell will have frozen over. At that point math will no longer exist. Yay!
(5) The box, if flattened to the side, will have the same width, but the height will be flattened to 0, and the length will be equal to two of the sides collapsed on each other. Although the volume will be 0, the width (being twice the height and 3 times the length) means the area is W x (1/2 W + 1/3 W). So the flattened area is 5/6 W^2 square units.

I would still sue the shipping company for damaging the box, and whoever wrote these questions for torturing your son.

If x+2y-x+3y is equal to 10 cents
x=0 dollars
y=2 cents

0+2X2-0+3X2= 10 cents

These questions are IMPOSSIBLE for me to solve and are just making my brain hurt.

When is your son ever going to use these methods in real life? Never, so they shouldn't be teaching it.

What has happened to schools?
