That would depend on your filing status (Single, Married etc...) which determines your exemption deduction. Then you have your standard deduction which you also subtract from your AGI. Any other credits, EIC? deduct those too! The amount you pay if any would be the amount still owed after your deductions (including tax paid already from your wages). If you paid too much or if your deductions exceed what is owed/due--- You get a refund for that amount. Better if you just go to the IRS website listed below beings sometimes this stuff is difficult to clearly explain.

Check the on-line HTML version of the 1040 instruction booklet 'Tax Tables' section.

Good Luck.............

This is like one of those math questions teachers threw at us in grade school: Not enough information. No one can answer your question without knowing how many dependents you have or expenses you might be able to write off, etc. Some people have to pay taxes instead of getting taxes back. It's easy to file taxes through Turbo Tax on line, and it only costs $25.

There's no way to say exactly without preparing your actual tax return. Your filing status, number of dependents, deductions if itemizing, etc. all come in to play.

Not only what he ^ said, but what was the breakdown in taxes? You can't get back what you paid into social security or medicare. Was there state tax withheld?
