Although there is no universal agreement on the definition of life, scientists generally accept that the biological manifestation of life exhibits the following phenomena:
Homeostasis: Regulation of the internal environment to maintain a constant state; for example, sweating to reduce temperature.
Organization: Being composed of one or more cells, which are the basic units of life.
Metabolism: Consumption of energy by converting nonliving material into cellular components (anabolism) and decomposing organic matter (catabolism). Living things require energy to maintain internal organization (homeostasis) and to produce the other phenomena associated with life.
Growth: Maintenance of a higher rate of synthesis than catalysis. A growing organism increases in size in all of its parts, rather than simply accumulating matter. The particular species begins to multiply and expand as the evolution continues to flourish.
Adaptation: The ability to change over a period of time in response to the environment. This ability is fundamental to the process of evolution and is determined by the organism's heredity as well as the composition of metabolized substances, and external factors present.
Response to stimuli: A response can take many forms, from the contraction of a unicellular organism when touched to complex reactions involving all the senses of higher animals. A response is often expressed by motion, for example, the leaves of a plant turning toward the sun or an animal chasing its prey.
Reproduction: The ability to produce new organisms. Reproduction can be the division of one cell to form two new cells. Usually the term is applied to the production of a new individual (either asexually, from a single parent organism, or sexually, from at least two differing parent organisms), although strictly speaking it also describes the production of new cells in the process of growth.

Life consists of paradox, humor and change.
Paradox--> Life is death and death is life. Love is the meaning of life, but true love means dying to self that the other may live...ie. my loss is your gain. Love is a sacrifice of life (think Jesus) that you may live for someone else.
Change-->Who Moved My Cheese is the best little book to describe the whole change scenario. We are always changing....we need change...without it we would go extinct! The ultimate change comes at birth and death...change into our eternal bodies. So the peak of life is actually DEATH! If we knew this, why don't we just die while we are still alive and that way we can live more fruitfully!?!
Humor--> Don't you see the humor in this??

When you are breathing.
When new life is just begun is the sweetest life of all.
Forever Life
By
Jackie Edwards
I'll look into your big blue eyes,
And you will look back.
I'll hold your tiny hand in mine
As you hold my finger so tight.
I'll touch your little foot to the palm of my hand as I
Count to ten twice.
I'll hold you while you sleep.
And kiss each cheek.
I'll watch you grow
And run and play,
I will hold you "so close and.
Sing songs just for you as we
Play patty cake and this old man.
We will go to the park
Or just sit and rock.
What ever the zephyr winds blow our way we will do.
And I will always love you.

all this while i have been thinking that life constitutes air we breathe and blood flowing to as well as from the heart. my limited understanding with this puny mind has time again been proved utterly wrong.
life, as i see it is, relationships we have and share with others, emotions we experience, finally pain and suffering we are subjected to. i saw life in a hospital, that's where all the buzz and activity goes on and not at a shopping mall or a wedding reception. i also saw life when i held a week old baby.

Life is the purpose of the universe if we can see the inherent intelligence in matter as it organizes into ever more complex levels to manifest that intelligence. The universe as we know it came into existence over 13 billion years ago and has evolved in such a way as to produce a planet like our earth which has evolved in such a way as to produce us in 4.7 million years. What do you suppose is the drive behind this inherent intelligence in matter?

I've asked this question many times and so has the rest of the world. The only answer to this question though can't be found sitting infront of the computer. It may help, but the answer is outside of yourself and within the lives of others. Life is the observation of itself.

This is a not an easy question to answer, but if you are serious about the question that you had asked, I recommend you read through the book, Falun Gong. Perhaps, you will be able to find the answer to what you are seeking after reading it through.
The online version of the book can be found at http://www.falundafa.org/book/eng/flg_2001.htm
I hope you'll find what you are looking for.
