We live in a Republic. There is no need for a referendum to change or create law. We elect representatives to create laws for us.

I don't feel that our government use the referndum enough, however I am a smoker and do kind of agree with the ban. It is up to me if I smoke but not my friends, plus in Ireland where the ban is already some of the smoking areas are quite nice.
We should be more like the French and have referendums all the time especially with all the bad decisions the government make.

There was no referendum because our current government wasn't interested in allowing freedom of choice. I have no objection to refrain from smoking in public places but businesses should have had the option to choose. Oddly enough Parliament is exempt. How awfully fair that sounds!

Quite frankly we are living in a dictatorship, we should have a referendum for all important issues, the government should listen to the people. So come on smokers into the closet you go!

There doesn't need to be referendum to ban people from smoking. Common sense should tell you that you shouldn't smoke. Your lungs weren't made to breathe that filth in. Good clean air is what we all have a right to and banning smoking in public places is a move in the right direction.

Because we have an elected parliament to make those decisions on behalf of the electorate. Unfortunately we can't all be pleased all of the time - me included.
