During the war, Nevada and West Virginia joined as new states of the Union. Tennessee and Louisiana were returned to Union control early in the war. (At one point Tennessee considered seceding from the Confederacy!)

The territories of Colorado, Dakota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Washington fought on the Union side.

Sorry to tell you, but a previous answer was wrong because she named some states, such as Alaska, Montana,and Washington that were not yet states at the time of the American Civil War. Don't be confused by "Washington, DC" which is not a state but a federal area known as "District of Columbia". It is the capitol of the USA.
