Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Missouri and Kentucky were sometimes counted as Confederate they had a Star on many flags but they never seceded. God Bless The Confederacy!

California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin. During the war, Nevada and West Virginia joined as new states of the Union. Tennessee and Louisiana were returned to Union control early in the war. (At one point Tennessee considered seceding from the Confederacy!)

The territories of Colorado, Dakota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Washington fought on the Union side.

Too bad. God Bless You and Our Southern People.

Sorry to tell you, but a previous answer was wrong because she named some states, such as Alaska, Montana, and Washington that were not yet states at the time of the American Civil War. Don't be confused by "Washington, DC" which is not a state but a federal area known as "District of Columbia". It is the capitol of the USA.

Here are five northern states or "Union States"--- New York, New Jersey, Vermont, New Hampshire, West Virginia.

Here are five southern or "Confederate States"--- Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina.

Oklahoma has continually been a southern state, although, it wasn't seen a southern state on the time of the civil conflict because it hadn't been further, although the tribes did signal an alliance with the confederates
