One of the overlooked works of Mark Twain - 'Roughing It' (1872) is a good account in American literature of the "common man".

Travels With Charley by John Steinbeck. Good reading!
Find it at Amazon.com

"Travels with Charley" is a fairly literal account of a journey John Steinbeck took in the Fall and Winter of 1960 with his dog, Charley. Starting in his home in Long Island, New York, he drove to Maine in the far north-east of America, then west along the northen border, down the Pacific coast and then back home through Texas and the Deep South.

It tells about all of the people he met in his travels.

Look up Thomas Payne, Patrick Henry (especially), and/or Ben Franklin.

You got some other good answers too ... like John Steinbeck ... and I would add " The Old man and the Sea " by Hemingway.

You choose;
Jonnie
