I don't see how it could hurt.

Possibly. But we'll never know for sure how not having religion would effect the world today. Things could totally be screwed over without some of the things we have today, like religion. It would make sense that the world would be peaceful without religion, but you never know how what would stem from not having religion. It could very well lead to some kind of chaos, disruption, or whatever. But that's a good question to think about. It makes for good conversation and open thinking, because there really isn't a correct answer.

I don't think it would lead to world peace completely. Not all wars are over religion. Just last week a young mother of 23 was shot dead a few suburbs away. A guy walked into a real estate office and they had words over rent...he shot her, then himself. This is only a small example, but things like this can escalate into a riotous episode. Abandoning religion may help in some of the larger rifts and wars, but there are still going to be millions of smaller things happening

No. Wars are never fought over religion. Religion defines the sides. Wars are fought over resources. The identity of Christian vs. Muslim just gives you something to demonize the other side for. I'll take a supposedly religious war as an example...the crusades. They were a lot more about high birth rates and small inheritiances for the nobility then they were for religion. The crusades were a land grab. Most wars are.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has little to do with religion. The conflict is over land. Jews and Muslims historically got along better then Jews did with Christians. From a personal/individual level fights can happen over religion. Religion can be used to motivate forces...or as a rationale for fighting....but the issues are always over resources.

An old Pink Floyd song has a line that goes "Hey! Get your filthy hands off my desert!", just before a shell flies in and explodes. I don't think abandoning all religion would end all wars, but making religious radicals understand that their religions DON'T advocate war might help. The American Civil War wasn't fought over religious differences, nor were many other wars. Humans of one faction will go to war with another, whether they are religious or not. It is the sad truth about human nature.

Absolutely what a brilliant question my friend. Yes it would help greatly in achieving world peace all religion does is put false hope in people's minds I believe religion is a tool the weak use to justify there lives because they can't admit to the fact that life is pointless and they are not important. World peace will never be achieved becuase humans are all greedy and world peace won't be achieved but abandoning religion would help.

I think that’s a tough one! although i'm against organised religion i think people need a core belief system in order to keep them on track whether what they believe is true or not.
Sadly i think there are far too many people out there that
need an incentive to be good and respectful, and that comes in the reward/punishment of heaven and hell etc...
I don't think a government alone could do this if religion did not exist...
hmm now maybe i'm thinking along the lines of the ppl that created organised religion to begin with!!! not good!

Nope. there are a number of atheists that could desire to diminish your throat in a coronary heart beat. The Hell's Angels are a violent lot and for the main area have not got self assurance in God. adult males have a grasping nature. they are going to use faith as yet another gadget to benefit skill and wealth. they are going to use ANY gadget at their disposal. faith is oftentimes hijacked via those varieties - and specific i think there are some religions that thrive on violence (seem on the middle east as an occasion).... so.., no .., international peace can't be performed via banning all religions.

Abandoning religions is not the solution. World peace would be better achieved by sticking to the basic tenets of religions, all of which promote peace, harmony and social amity.

Religion in itself does not contribute to all the war that's happening around us. It is the imperfect nature of humans that spawns war. Anger, fear, hatred, pride, ignorance, jealousy, misunderstanding, etc.. are all seeds of conflict. If you get rid of all these, then there would be world peace.

All wars are about politics or power. Religion is used by powermongers to get people to fight for them or their political cause.
I believe if we did away with religion it will certainly cause less wars because it would be harder for those powermongers to get people to fight for thier cause or to pull the wool over their eyes.
