If the DVD drive came with your computer, it is most likely a CD drive, not a DVD drive. All computers sold with DVD drives come with pre-installed drivers and software necessary for playing legitimate DVDs (like commercially available ones and data DVDs). Additional soft only allows better playback control. The only other possibilities that I can think of are that you installed the DVD drive into an old computer that is NOT equipped with DVD based soft or that the particular DVD you are trying to play is corrupted. If the former is the case, you need to purchase DVD soft and installed a DVD player, and if the latter is the case, there's nothing you can do about it.

Are you sure it's a DVD drive? If so, then I suggest you use the Device Manager in Windows to right click on the particular drive and choose "Uninstall". Then exit from there, and reboot the computer. Windows should find the drive as "new hardware" and re-install the driver for it. Then try the DVD again. If it still doesn't play, then chances are that the laser for the DVD is not working. You may then have to replace the drive with a new one.

could be a number of things, if you are sure it is in fact a DVD player. Go here:http://www.k-litecodecpack.com/ download the full codec pack and that may help. Additionally, if you are trying to play a dvd movie, you must also have a third party player, like VLC:http://www.videolan.org/. They should call WMP the WIMP.
