My mother and I believe it comes from the movie: 'Shadow of the Thin Man' with William Powell and Myrna Loy. We think the phrase comes from a scene where Myrna runs out of 'Mario's' restraunt and hails a cab, telling him the 'Follow that car', the one her husband is in. The cab then leaves without her.
