Assuming you're not asking about the countries themselves, and the war instead, the only similarity is that wars have happened in both of those countries and America has played a leading role in each, but the etiology of the wars is completely different, and the purposes are completely different, and the goal of capturing the leader was completely different in Iraq from Vietnam. I'm sure if one stretches one's imagination, and smokes gobs of dope and shoots up some nonsense, then maybe under those circumstances they might try to argue that there is a similarity between the two wars besides America's involvement, but beyond that, no way. God Bless you.

If you mean, are the two wars similar, then yes, very much so. In both cases, we had no good reason to be there and we took on an enemy we could not defeat. If you read your history, you know that the British soldiers had no chance against the Americans hiding behind trees and shrubs - revolutionary insurgents. We Americans found the same conditions in Vietnam and in Iraq. In both cases the countries are involved in their own civil war. We could not win in either case. Our military in Iraq are taking orders from a bunch of civilians who have never worn a uniform...what do you expect, intelligence?

Iraq is like Vietnam in almost every way. An otherwise stable and contained regime is invaded without a realistic expectation of what we were up against. No exit strategy. Complete failure of leadership in the highest levels of military and civilian channels.
What makes Iraq worse is that the tragic burden is not equally shared. There is no draft. The children of wealthy people (like senators and congressmen) are under represented in the military. It seems that people fighting a preemptive war are more often than not, those who had more lucrative opportunities in their life, well, preempted.
Please don't misread me. I am grateful for the sacrifice of our brave men and women. I know that they would be out there protecting me if there had been a legitimate threat to my freedom. I'm just saying that I would feel a whole lot better about things if the Bush twins were in combat fatigues outside the green zone at the moment.

Actually... no!
Now if John Kerry could get his swift boat to the Tigris River... ah, now then we could compare the two. But without that Iraq is very different from Viet Nam in many respects.
The only real similarity is that US troops are there fighting an unpopular and difficult war. If that's what you were going for then yes, I suppose the two are alike. But if you were really asking if there are any significant differences the answer would be that the two are not alike. The politics, the factions, the terrain, the civil war, the tactics of the enemy, the imported enemy itself, the weapons, the equipment.... on and on and on. All these are very different.
Of course there are many poiticians who would like to draw the comparison in spite of the fact that they know better. They are counting on the fact that Americans tend to forget. Also they know that young American voters did not experience the Viet Nam war so they don't know how very different the two conflicts really are and the reasons behind them.

Yes, in terms of support (or lack of) from fellow Americans. Politicians and the people would trash the military and the President wanting to send the troops home and leave the enemy alone. During World War II, soldiers had the support of their fellow countrymen and women. What happened?
