One Minute remaining in the period, one minute. Yeah that is for the players more then anyone. At least that is what I always took that as. See unlike Football or other sports hockey moves fast and rather constant. So they can't peek at the clock to see how long is left. This is a warning that you only have one minute left, or a reminder you still have a minute left.

Traditionally old time hockey never had big clocks. Time keepers at the bench were the only ones who knew the real time and would announce the last minute of the period for both teams to recognize it was so...

It's a stupid thing to do, and if the yanks come back and win, Kay is going to feel REALLY stupid. It's kinda like announcing the MVP, CY young, etc before the end of the season. But yes, they probably do it more to take up time during lulls in the game.

I like the question, I don't think I've ever heard anybody ask it. I would assume the same reason why in some stores they announce when the store is closing, so the players know that if they're gonna put something together they only have a minute, like a shopper only has "x" amount of minutes left to shop.

To let the players know because when they are skating all around they don't pay attention to the scoreboard and that's when they know to go all out in the last minute of the period, especially the third.

To let the players and coaches know. Alot of times they get so caught up in the game because of the intensity and don't get a chance to look up at the clock or think to look at the clock.

They give a warning just to let everyone know that the period is close to ending. Maybe one team is down at the end of a game and need to pull the goalie or rush hard one last time.

It's to really get the fans into it. Everything that he does is for the fans. They want to fans to get up and scream and yell and really get into a big part of the game. It isn't for a radio people. They know when a minute is coming up! It is for the fans...its all about the fans...keeping them pumped and into the game!

Tradition! Kind of like the 2 minute warning in Football..or 7th inning stretch in baseball. Remember clocks around a rink back in the day werent as easy to read!
