In ancient times, what is now France was called "Gaul" and was inhabited by a number of Celtic tribes. They wore wool garments, often woven in checks and plaid-like patterns. Men worn trousers and tunics that reached to mid-thigh, with belts. Women worn two styles of dresses: one shaped rather like an over-sized, ankle length T-shirt and belted at the waist; the other was a tube of fabric as wide from elbow to elbow when the arms are outstretched. This was pinned at the shoulders and bloused over a belt. Sometimes it was worn over top of the the other dress.

In the parts of Gaul ruled by Rome, Roman fashions also were worn.

During the medieval period, several different styles were worn. Google these terms:
Frankish dress
Merovingian
Bliaut
Cotehardie
Houppalande

During the renaisance, the French copied Italian styles from Venice and Florence.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say, clothes and maybe some sort of armor. I could be wrong though, they may have worn animal skins or nothing at all.
