No. As far as I am able to research it is not illegal to write on Canadian currency. The closest thing under the law that is illegal is altering currency for fraudulent purposes. There is no crime of "defacing" a coin or a bill. It is one of those urban legends that it was once a crime to write on currency because it might deface the portrait of the Queen, but that is not currenty listed in any reference books. This occasionally arises with those chemical pens that are dabbed onto a bill to detect counterfeits, but that is not "defacing" or "altering" the bill.

I don't think it is illegal to write on money, but it is illegal to cut it or make it unfit for use. Simple writing doesn't qualify as defacing.

Well, technically yes it is illegal, but you won't be prosecuted for it. It's considered "Destruction of Government Property". Basically, it would be vandalism.... but, I don't think anyone really cares.
