I have heard this before; I think I saw it on an Animal Rights website. I believe they were saying that many of these calves are killed because they are uneeded. Is it true?

Yes a milk cow must stay pregnant and nursing in order to give milk,a women does not give milk unless she is nursing. The calves are not killed but raised as milk cows and of course the males or steers will be sold as meat after they are feed for a year or two and grow to size.We hillbillies love you city folk cause we know stuff like this.

yes that is true. Calves around here don't get killed cuz they are not needed. There are different kinds of cows-there are angus that are used pretty much for butchering. then there are holsteins that are used mainly for milking. So like holstein calves-females grow up and get to do the whole milking thing and the bull calves will either be used for breeding or will be casterated(called steers when that happens) and once they reach a certain weight then they will be butchered.

It's gotta do with a hormone, produced only during and some months after pregnancy, that stimulates the mammary glands to secrete milk.
