my father brought me up under the impression that he lost his heart in the war. i thought this was true until high school. now that he has died..i still wonder if maybe he was honest . could he live without a heart ?

I'd like to think that he had a heart based on the way you had seen him treat others and yourself. Quite possibly he may have meant that the war had limited the amount of blind compassion he was able to give up to others. Many things can jade a person and change their perseption of the world, but this doesn't necessarily mean that your heart and soul are obliterated. Really, only he could have answered that question for you in better depths.

Of course not. Maybe your father means it figuratively, as in he was heartbroken by the war.

no, he probably just meant that he lost the "feeling" people often associate with their hearts.
