The Areola, which includes the darker area around the nipple, is thought to be darker than the rest of the skin so that is easier for a newborn baby to locate the nipple on a woman's chest. It is also thought to be darker because of the excessive amount of oil glands found around the nipple to make it soft and supple for a baby's mouth.
