I call him a narcissistic sociopath, a kindred spirit and my choice for doctor should i come down with a really freaky disease.
I would say he WAS a victim, but he has been offered multiple chances, and he has chosen to continue being the way he is.

Misanthrope is a perfect word to describe him. He might be a victim of something, but we haven't found out yet exactly what. We know he has issues with his father, but then, a lot of people do and don't have the attitude that he does towards people.
I'm feeling a little bit that way myself after they canceled the show for the President's speech. They only have about 2 new episodes every 100 weeks or so, (ok--an exaggeration) and I want my new episodes!!!

I love the show but house is definately a misanthrope. You're only a victim if you let yourself, and I really think that if house was a real person he would be pissed if you called him a victim. He's certainly not above using other people's sympathy for his own gain, which in my mind makes him anything but a victim.

In the episode "Three Stories" House confesses that he was an addict before he had the leg problem and that is part of the reason he has the leg problem. Still he blames the hospital for his leg. As for the pain that was his decision. One has to wonder if he could solve his problem would he. Sure he tried to fix the leg once but that just got in the way of his vicodin. he likes the permanent high.

Misery loves company, he hates the pain, takes pills to fight it, but the pain keeps his mind sharp to solve problems. There was a saying, "If you can feel the pain, then you know that you are still alive." I think he's a misanthrope that feels he's a victim!

he's no victim. he's an addict...a seemingly functional one mind you, but an addict. i hated the way they played out the trial episode. it was classic house, but i really wanted him to realize what he was doing was wrong and get himself fixed. i thought the laying in his own puke while his best buddy looked on the episode before was a wake up sign but no. i wouldn't have minded that she lied in court to protect him (not that i recommend that, but it fit the story), or that he beat the legal system, if he had taken some responsibility for his own actions by getting clean at the same time. he is an a** on the show but you root for him cause he helps people...it's hard to root for a druggie.

as long a the pills are only for legitimate pain..
is he really suffering or is he using it as an excuse to get high??
it a tv show, and is ficticious..but it bring up a good point..
some patients in pain do not get proper meds to live a some what normal life on BECAUSE of the people out there who con the system to get pills to feed their need to get high or to sell them to others to party on..
Welcome to the reality of the real drug wars..I am a "victim" of circumstance myself..we who need it have to fight to get minor amounts of help and have to go through the countless people who treat us like we are one of the conartist addicts...Makes me sick to even think about the reality ...

He's a drug addict. If I ever had the misfortune of ending up being treated by a doc like House, just let me bleed.
