When I was pregnant I too had insomnia problems. You have a lot on your mind and it can keep you awake. Also just the discomfort of your growing body. It helps to make sure you have the right kind of matress that gives you good back support. I didn't have a good bed until my 8th month of pregnancy when I finally got a Select Comfort bed, and I wish I could have afforded to get it earlier on in the pregnancy. In addition to a good bed you want a good pillow with neck support. It may also help to sleep with a pillow between your knees to relieve your lower back as was suggested in one of the other answers.

And lastly, if you really want to invest money in something that might help you, I bought an ambient sound machine from Brookstone. I can't emphasize enough how much this sound machine helped cure my insomnia. It emits extremely relaxing and pleasant ambient sounds like water flowing and space sounds that lull you to sleep. If you focus on the sounds it can help you clear your head of distracting thoughts that keep you awake. I relied on that machine so much to cure my imsomnia when I was pregnant that even now I still use it to help me sleep.

But the added bonus of having it is, when you are in labor you can use it in the delivery room while you are having labor pains to help you focus on something relaxing to ease your mind during the birthing! The machine is a bit expensive but well worth it. There are cheaper versions of it at Sharper Image.

Hope this helps and sweet dreams!

K.. here are some suggestions. Try taking half a unisom before bed. It's perfectly safe to take during your whole pregnancy, so don't worry. You can also try a pillow between your knees. It helps keep your back straight and as your belly grows, it will be nice to have. Try a cup of chamomile tea before bed. It will help calm you down, you can also try a warm bath before bed. This will help relax you and will help make you feel more comfortable.

I totally know what you are going through too. I'm 13 weeks along and I have problems sleeping, even with the unisom. And then, when I do get to sleep, I toss and turn.

If you find it that hard to get to sleep, get up and do something like read a book, or play on the computer until your eyes feel tired and you think you can sleep. Laying there sometimes only aggrivates the problem. Good luck!!! I hope some of this helps..

take a warm bath before you go to bed, and trying putting a scented oil, like lavander in the water. Turn your lights off, lay in your bed and relax. Make sure there is no tv or radio. I had the same problem when I was pregnant, and sorry to sound cynical but it only gets worse. I think its your bodys way of preparing you for sleep deprivation after the baby is born. In my last 2 weeks of my pregnancy, i was so big and uncomfortable, that I was only getting about 2 or 3 hours of sleep a night. I actually got more sleep after my son was born. But its all worth it in the end! good luck with your pregnancy

i used to have the same problem when i was pregnant, i didn't have the morning sickness but had a problem with my sleep. try to avoid sleeping in the afternoon, try to walk around if you don't have a bed rest criteria slowly, and try to breathe properly slowly and try to be calm, having a glass of warm milk helps(consult your doc if you could have the warm glass of milk some of my friends were not supposed to ). i have tried all these and it does help, i think its stress or excitement which causes the sleeping problems. anyways Good luck

Well i am 35 weeks pregnant and its almost imposible for me to go to sleep. My doctor and some books that I have read say that you should sleep on your left side with pillows all around you so that you can be comfortable. It gets worse wen you get to your 7th month. I wake up almost every hour. I would sleep with many pillows if i was you.

Take naps. This is the time you will feel tired. I am 36 weeks and I wake up every hour to go pee! Sleep on your left side it is supposed to help.
