Literally, a megalith is a really big rock. Megaliths were used in early monuments in many cultures around the world, sometimes as single 'standing stones' and sometimes in larger constructions. There are megalithic temples in the Mediterranean, fields of standing stones (menhirs) in France, and megalithic tombs (dolmens) in many areas with Celtic heritage. The most famous megalithic structure in the world is probably Stonehenge.
