19 out of 20 times that I order fast food, there seems to be a big problem. I wait for eye contact when ordering (this takes a while sometimes). I speak clear and tell exactly what I want. Very simple. For example, I'd like a 1/4 lb cheeseburger with no mustard. I always get asked do you want the meal? or Do you want a number 4? I repeat exactly what I just said. A cheeseburger is a sandwich. If I wanted a meal I would ask for that, I don't eat #'s. Why is it so difficult to get what you simply ask for and nothing more or less?

i don't think it has anything to do with the workers being deaf, dumb or both. When i was 16 years old, i use to work for Burger King & every time a customer would just order 1 cheeseburger, we are trained to always offer or ask them if they would like the meal instead because it's a BETTER DEAL & most of the time there are specials, it is their job to offer you more than what you order. I think every fast food place & restaurant will do the same. It's called CUSTOMER SERVICE, not stupidity. Don't be one of those annoying, rude customers who complain. If a cheeseburger is all you want, then that's FINE. just simply remember that these people are just doing their job. You have no right to assume they are deaf, dumb or both. If you don't like how their system operates then you need to complain to the manager.

"19 out of 20 times that I order fast food, there seems to be a big problem" So learn to cook." I always get asked do you want the meal?" You would be surprised how many times people ask for the sandwich and actually want (and mean to order) the meal, and get mad when they don't get it. I recommend you put on a uniform, get behind a counter, and revolutionize the industry! Otherwise shut up!

Sounds like you've never worked in a fast food restaurant. I've worked at a couple different ones, and we are required to "upsell", which means, when you ask for a specific sandwich, we're REQUIRED to suggest something to go with it- like a drink or "in a meal"....

Have you ever worked in customer service or sales? It's hard work, and there are a lot of people out there who don't appreciate what the working stiff is required to do.

I've worked the drive-through alone- and if you've never done it, here's a little slice of the multi-tasking involved--

There's a car at the menu board, and they're talking static in my ear. I need to take their order, verify and give them their total.

I also have a car at the window. I need to take their money, make change, make drinks, get napkins, straws, etc. and put that stuff in the bag with the food and get the food out the window...

And this all has to be done at the same time, with a smile in my voice and on my face... "Have a nice day."

Good luck with that.

Instead of picking on fast food workers, challenge yourself to work in that kind of environment for a while, then see how you feel about customers.

Many customers treat fast food workers like morons, and many times, it is undeserved. All you have to do is sit back and watch a fast food counter for a while, and see how people treat those workers.

If you've worked in a fast food environment, have a chat with the manager. Say, "I know this isn't the greatest job in the world, but the service here is not as good as it could be."

But have a little respect for these people. They do a job I'd never be willing to do. Besides, they are providing you a service, and you should be happy they aren't spitting in your food . . . as far as you know.

You gotta find the ones that are run by the 40 year old managers that live and breath that ****...teenagers just don't care and sadly they're the ones that are taking a filing your order...just don't be a jerk to them...cause you'll get a spit sandwich or sometimes even worse...

I used to work at Subway when I was a teen and this chick came through the driveway with an attitude and then she called me a rude name...I poured the juice from the jalapeno peppers onto her sandwich....but she deserved it. No bodily fluids. I was sweet and she was just a beoch.

well i hate to disagree... my boyfriend works at Harvey's.. and has been for the last 4 years. I do know that some of the people he works with don't care about their job.. but he goes the extra mile to make sure that he makes eye contact.. and sometimes even tries to make the customer laugh.. so i don't know if you were having a bad day or whatever.. but i bet if u tried to make small talk with some one at the local mcdonald's or whatever your day just might get better.. cause i can guarantee you that most fast food workers are tired of people treating them like they are deaf and/or dumb.

Wow, that's way harsh. I do not believe that fast food workers are deaf OR dumb. I believe that they are trying to up your purchase from a simple cheeseburger (with no mustard) to a meal, which is probably what they are told to do. Get over yourself.

First of all, its unfair to call anyone dumb, deaf or insinutate anything like that..judged on what they do for a living. Secondly, they HAVE TO ASK YOU IF YOU WANT THE MEAL, ok? Its called suggestive selling! duh. Its to prevent idiots who dont know the difference between a combo and a sandwich to know their options. Its just customer service, you may as well get used to it..all business associates have to do it. All you have to do is say "I want such and such, JUST THE SANDWICH" Don't stress. Fast food is seriously way more stressful than you think..you should try being a human.

* Okay, I have only worked at 3 fast food places, but they do that because they will get fired if they do not. Their job is to try to get you to buy other items. Don't be so hard on them, you don't want them to lose their job do you? The three places i worked it was a firing offence if we were caught just selling a customer what they wanted without trying to sell them other items. You would be suprised how many people do buy a meal that wer not going to or other items that they had not planned. It works, so they require their employees to do this.*
