Stop drafts and cover windows

2007-01-29 16:22:34 · answer #1 · answered by Help Needed 3 · 0 0

Be sure to winterize your home. By this I mean cover the windows with plastic and seal them, put a rolled up blanket in front of outer doors to keep the heat in and the cold draft out.
Invest in an electric blanket for your bed and then turn down the heat in your bedroom.
You can re-route your clothes dryer hose so that the heat goes into the house and not to the outside. Just cover the end of the dryer hose with a pantyhose leg to catch the lint.
Close doors to rooms you don't use often and turn the heat down in them.
When you are finished cooking with the oven, leave the door open so the heat can warm the kitchen. Same with the clothes dryer.

Hope this helps.

Does your heating have a thermostat? If it does I turn it down when I go to bed at night. I turn it to 60 with a comforter. This help me sleep better and save on my utility bills. Then always make sure your electric appliances are off or unplug when not in use. Make sure lights are off when not in use too. This way I save money and the environment. Good luck

Check for drafts around the doors and windows. You can do this easily with smoke. If there is, you'll need to insulate them. We keep our heat set very low and wear more clothes and use afghans! Close the registers in rooms that you're not in all day. Don't heat the bedrooms. We do this in our home and it's really helped. We use a space heater in the living room.

We sprayed 50 bags of insulation up in the attic. We did it last spring and saved a bunch on electric during the summer months and the winter months.

We closed off the other parts of the house upstairs (and lived on the first floor) with plastic (we got it free at a building supply place like Lowes), block the air return register (it's the grates in the wall or floor) in rooms you don't use, seal up the inside of the windows with plastic.

Keeping the heat down to 15C(62F) during the night, and a medium temp during the day. When you are not home turn down the heat to night levels. Eat well, as well, and keep the fire burning within - makes the room seem warmer.
