Hey! I'm looking to take Fashion Studies in highschool too! Anyway, here goes. Couture, or Haute Couture, literally means 'high fashion'. The designer Haute Couture collections for a certain season are usually avant garde. This, of course, depends on the designer. Designers like John Galliano, who designs for the Christian Dior label, always puts on a show. His collections are most of the time, flashy, over the top and...interesting. On the other hand, the Armani Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2007 collection was not as flashy yet they were absolutely beautiful. Haute Couture clothes are all about the attentionn to detail, luxury they were made to be, and the materials that went into making that certain item of clothing. Drop by style.com to see images from the Spring/Summer 2007 collections! Hope I've helped!
P.S. Christian Lacroix always does amazing couture collections. You might want to check that one out too. :D

Others have been partially correct in that couture clothing is high fashion, outrageously expensive, and avant garde (in other words, kind of "out there"). But for someone to call themself an actual couture designer, they need to be licensed by the French government. So while it is true that couture clothing is everything mentioned above, not everything expensive/well-made is actually couture.

couture is a word that describes fashion that is made in beautiful fabrics and carefully made garments.. couture is not everyday wear and is custom made for the customer who orders it.. ready-to-wear is right in between everyday wear and couture ..

Real couture is handmade clothing altered to the specifications of your body. It's all outrageously expensive, once-in-a-lifetime designer stuff. Check out Dior's latest haute couture line here:
