Valentine's Day is more of an "inexpensive but thoughtful" gift day. Since he lives far away, I would send him a card and maybe a small, thoughtful gift. You could make the card yourself if you feel that a hand-made gift would be appropriate in your case. I've drawn or made cards for both friends and significant others in the past.

Think about all the times you have talked about what each other likes to do or think about - and write a nice letter to go with it - It really doesn't matter what the gift is, because of the time and thought that was in the letter. The gift is just the envelope for the "something special"

If he is worth your time and effort, send him a plane ticket or go there to surprise him. Then you could start dating him but of course you would have to change your life especially to go to another country. Otherwise find out what he likes, that is reasonable in cost and send that as a gesture of a good friendship.

Get him a day at a local beauty spa... Most spas offer a day of beauty that includes a massage, hot wax treatment on hands and feet, hair style, and lunch for $100 to $200. It's something that most guys think they wouldn't like, but once they try it, they love it! You can probably pay by credit card and have them print a coupon that you send him in a card.

Giving a guy a gift depends on his age, personality, job description for me to make an assessment and to give an appropriate answer. however,If he his an adult give him a gift of sentimental value for him to cherish. Here are some ideas that you may choose from:
a office dairy,pens,brief case,a tool box,Ipod,camera,a novel
I hope that you will be able to pick from or expound from these ideas.

YOU CAN EITHER give him A CALL... or
SEND HIM A TIE OR A SHIRT (Both will be even better) along with a Post Card with the kind of words saying what you wish to tell him...

You should get him something cute, sweet and memorable. Like if you dont want to spend so much molah on this gift, send him something like his favorite cereal, wrapped in christmas paper. He'd definately remember this gift, instead of something traditional...you'd get borwnie points for that!
