I don't think people take marriage as a joke it's more that couples don't realize whats involved to keep a marriage going. Keeping a marriage going can be hard work sometimes and both will have to compromise. Unfortunately divorce is to easy and instead of trying to work things out couples divorce instead and the worst part is when children are involved. Then it can be very hard on women because most men don't want to get into a ready made family they want to start one of there own and a majority of the time the women get the children.

I don't think most people take marriage as a joke but I do think that they take it to lightly. Most couples getting married today don't take the time to look far enough ahead and look at the what if's or the maybe's.Almost every couple getting married today never thinks about looking ahead and talking about the possibility of separation. Most never talk about how they feel or how they stand on issues in marriage. This is why so many fail today.Nobody thinks ahead and plans for the rough times even tough everything is good at the moment.

I think people have a misconception of marriage. They see the TV shows and movies and start to think they are what marriage should be. When they have a disagreement and fight, they take that as a sign that they aren't meant for each other and give up. They don't realize that they are 2 separate people sharing their lives together, there's going to be periods where you don't get along all the time. You just get through them one day at a time and if your communicating with each other and love and respect each other, you will work through it eventually, but a lot of people are unwilling to take the time that it takes to make a marriage work for the long term.

I don't, but people get married for the wrong reason every day, plus if a person cheats, that is grounds for divorce, in my opinion.

I think that people should wait longer to get married, that might help the divorce rate a little.

Some people do not respect marriage, nor their selves.

no , i dont think they take it as a joke persay, i think that society has made it to easy to just get divorced, its acceptable now, where years ago it was something to be ashamed of.. I think also the problem is people say their vows on their wedding day and to them its just words to say that day, instead of a promise they are making to live by every day and not just when its convient.. i think theres a lack of morals, values and accountability these days, and thats why the divorce rate is so high..

I really don't think very many people think of marriage as a "joke." I think the divorce rate is high because people are too selfish, greedy, materialistic, and expect too much of another human being.
When you put your hope and trust in mere human beings (even the best ones) you are bound to be disappointed.

Yes i sure do think that people take their vows and marriages as a joke... They definitely do not take it seriously most of the time and they are not truley commited... They should not even marry if they cannot be commited and take their vows seriously. Great question by the way... I love it:)

I think many people, especially those in their first marriage,
think of marriage as a trial period.....we'll give it a try, but if
it doesn't work out, we'll just get divorced. Too bad for them.
Marriage with the right person can be awesome.

I don't think some people understand what they are getting into when they get married. They think it's going to be a certain way and they are ultimately disappointed. I don't think people think it's a joke but I think you need to know everything about it before you make a commitment like that.
