THIS is an easy question to answer. While there is a lot of animation out there, the "original" anime cartoons are mainly from Japan. And their cartoons are designed not only for children, but also for adults. These cartoons are much more in depth than most American cartoons, have a story line, plot, the characters have depth and emotion, and generally are more entertaining than American cartoons - and they make you think. Which is why many people who are labelled "nerds" enjoy these cartoons, because they can understand the level of thought that went into making them. And because many people who don't understand the whole concept just say "I don't get it" they label the rest of us who DO get it as nerds.
To travel back to the good old days, and speak as one of the original nerds (watch any Revenge of the Nerds movie)....
"Do you think the jocks of the world will ever get it? The world is ruled by NERDS...."

People generally refer to anime fans as nerds because of how devoted anime fans can be. And often nerd is associated with people who have a deep passion in something and so when they see someone who loves anime and lets say goes to anime conventions, they associate that with someone who likes star trek alot and is a trekky.
It's not about the content of the anime and how developed and thoughtfull it can be that people associate watches of anime to be nerds but just how deeply fans can appreciate and enjoy anime. Going to conventions, watching their favorite shows the minute they can get it, having discussions with their friends about the lates episodes, collecting anime merchandise, listening to the music, although nothing is wrong with that and is a healthy habit, others who don't have such strong feelings for things especially anime, just see that as being nerdy because people spend so much time and effort into it and lable it as such.
Anime indeed is pretty awesome and can be very enjoyable and which is why so many people adore it and get so involved into it, it's just that peole who don't understand anime or watch it, don't understand how passionate people can get over it , and the only word that they can describe it is nerd, unfortunatly.

When I first met my (now) husband, I thought it was hilarious that his favorite television show was called "Cowboy Bebop". Just think about the title, it sounds pretty silly. The fact that he had cartoon posters all over his apartment also took a little getting used to. Its not something you normally see (well not for my generation- its pretty common now)
He actually introduced me to the world of anime. It took me a while to get past the silly little outtakes (think about how the kid reacts when he is called short in FMA) but now I like anime too.
Is my husband a nerd? Absolutely, and I love him for it. But I think that (good) Anime is for anyone who likes to watch cartoons with an Eastern philosophy behind them. Of course it is going to take someone who thinks outside the box and is brave enough to risk being laughed at for watching cartoon. The good anime takes an intelligent person to watch and appreciate it.

well, some people probably thought anime is for the people who doesn't socialise a lot. that's why they simply judged that anime is for nerds. or, in other words, "otaku". which is SO not true. i socialise AND watch anime too. that doesn't make me a nerd, right? i mean, people should stop labeling each other and get to know the person before they pass a judgment. ^_^V

Maybe because they are so used to being fed sound bites and watching "reality tv" that their brains are too atrophied to be able to understand it? American animated series can't hold a candle to anime.
Anime is deep, emotional and thought provoking. It has a plot, a hero, a villain and well defined characters. In a word... amazing!

DUH! It's mega awesome! They just don't like it because they are losers with nothing better to do. I love anime and manga, and I'm hardly a nerd. How do I know, you ask? Because I've got all the guys in my class whipped. Can a nerd do that? I think not. ^-^

Because they are too lame to come out and say they envy us-- Besides, what's wrong with being a nerd?
And I agree with that other guy, nerds rule the world! (it's true)

Anime is amazing, and anyone who calls me a nerd for liking it will end up eating my fist.
Anime is NOT just for "nerds", and if it is, oh well...... I guess I'm a nerd.
