The prefered method is using a digital camera and not a regular video camera, that way you can manipulate the pictures to give the illusion of motion.

However, if you got a very limited budget, a video camera should do fine, especially if it got a feature to make a stop motion animation. If you can get a digital camera with a feature to make a stop motion animation, that's even better.

How to make a stop motion animation?

1. You set up the objects and their backgrounds

2. You take a photo of the objects and their backgrounds

3. You set up the objects and their backgrounds in a different way

4. You take a photo of the objects and their backgrounds

And so on...

Steps 3 and 4 are repeats of steps 1 and 2, you kept repeating them until you gained the desired length.

If you want to make a super easy stop animation, practice on Microsoft PowerPoint. Make a simple image, than click duplicate slide. On the new slide (which should look just like the first), move the image slightly, and repeat. Kids in my class did this last year, and it was super cool. Some made them about talking triangles, others about a flower, but mine was by far the coolest. It was about a race car driver who fell into an underground government testing facility in area 56, then evaded shark tanks, rings of fire, and even a giant olive monster, to make it to the finish line just in time.
