Wood pellets used in the wood pellet burning furnaces you can buy for inside your house contain some ingredients other than wood. Whereas the wood pellets used in wood pellet burning smokers (for cooking ribs, barbeque, and such) are made completely of wood.

Both type of pellets are made by compressing with a high amount of pressure, done with a machine.

The machinery necessary costs about 200,000 dollars. The raw materials are mostly waist generated by the lumber industry, so that will be cheap (but not free). You will also need a large warehouse type structure to produce and store the pellets. The finished product has to be maintained at a certain moisture content. If you can get this all together, there is a huge demand for the pellets, so selling whatever you make would not be an issue!
