I have been using my Gateway Laptop's CD burner to burn a lot of CDs and DVDs. Will this wear it out?

Everything wears out over time. The purpose of having a burner is to burn media. If it wears out replace it. It's pointless to use the drive if you're concered about what is inevitable.

My first burner is six or seven years old and it still works. But it is a mechanical device with moving parts and moving parts wear out - no way to know when.

My one is 4 years old and perfect. I am not a heavy user for DVD burning but I always [every week] clean drive lens using wet & Dry lens cleaner. I have added 2nd writer with lightscribe option recently but I think my old one writes quicker than old one!
