At the time you accept the invitation, you should ask whether the airfare will be paid for or reimbursed by the potential employer. Do not be afraid to ask. Asking a question is not the same as demanding. If they are upset because you asked, I would not go to the interview. You have all the information about that employer at that point you need to know. And if they do not mention it, and you do not ask, you may be seen as somewhat weak, or easily intimidated. I think most potential employers will pay, but if they see you as coming to an interview where local people can easily fill the job description, they may not. At that point you can decide if you want to go to the interview, or not. If they are too tight to pay for your airfare, then chances are good you will also have to pay for all relocation costs if you are hired.

In the USA, this is not typical, unless you are being recruited by the company. If you are the initiator, you typically pay the expenses involved with interviewing for the position. However, if a company contacts you interested in you coming to interview, they will probably pay the expenses.

Here in the US, if you are invited to travel to a company to interview, they will usually arrange for your travel (hotel and plane ticket), and will explain their policy for reimbursing you for cab fare, meals, etc. Otherwise, you can't expect to get reimbursed for any expenses. However, in the US under certain circumstances, you can deduct job hunting expenses from your taxes. Obviously though, you can't deduct expenses that were reimbursed to you from a potential employer.

In my profession here in the USA (engineering), employers fly me out for the interviews and pay for my expenses (airport parking, hotel, cabs, dinner).

they could have paid it interior the 1st place. Did you communicate that purely before the interview? if so then ask them how they like you to submit your expenditures for repayment.
