Lately I have been hearing a lot of child abduction and molestation cases on TV. Many of these suspects have committed these offenses more than once. To me the solution is a life senctence for anyone charged with this criminal activity for their 1st offense.
I truly believe you should not get a second chance on something you should know not to do already. I think this is the closest you get from preventing these criminals from doing it again.

However, I suspect our society does not want to engage in such harsh penalities. My question is why? What is it about our human heart that tolerates evil? Why are our hearts so weak that we cannot accept strict punishment on those who truly deserve it?

If any of you had your child kidnapped or molested how strong would you feel about the life sentence?

If you disagree with me on the above...please justify your disagreement. I am curious to understand why you think the way you do. This is more about you understanding yourself.

This is how I see it:
You take a life, you rape, molest, etc you get the death penalty.

You're part of a gang, and/or you commit crimes against others, including violent acts, and you get a minimum of life in prision.

All other crimes, attempted rehabilitation, but if it doesn't work, the punishment fit the crime - ie, remove the hand of a thief.

I believe if someone is truly guilty, they should be treated as such.

BTW, when I say prision, I don't mean the PC kind that is in place now a days. I mean a stark, barren, unfriendly environment, with no special meals, no television, no exercise rooms, no games, no entertainment of any kind.

First of all, I agree with you 100%. A good fix would be a bullet. Where it goes would be up for debate.

I almost think that the world is too full of bleeding hearts that are led by groups like the ACLU. In an instance like this, an adult has attacked probably the most defenseless and innocent person on the planet. There is no excuse. I have a hard time trying to think of any worse offense.

I've seen stories of how distraught fathers take matters into their own hands. My question is: can you blame them? Our society and justice system really needs help on this issue.

Here is an interesting question. What if a child was abducted and killed and the parent was someone protecting the rights of the offender. Would the parent still feel the same way?????? Makes you wonder.

While i despise child molesters, i do not agree with a life sentence for all first time offenders. "To me the solution is a life sentence for anyone charged with this criminal activity for their 1st offense." So if an 18 year old is pulled over and a joint is found. They get them for possession. Then they have to spend the rest of their lives in prison because they wanted to smoke a joint? Or do you mean just child molesters get a life sentence. Well prison is for reform not for shelter. But i kind of agree with you and not. I think our hearts tolerate evil because we also think everyone has some good in them as well. I do think however, from what i have seen and read that it is hard to reform child molesters so i guess life imprisonment is something to think about.

I agree with you.

I believe that some predators deserve the death penalty on the first offense, as it may be just to horrific to tolerate. I think that by taking a dangerous predator, such as a child rapist/molester, out of permanent circulation is something that society needs and is entitled to.

Why should normal, law abiding folks be terrorized by these monsters- just because some a**hole corrections psych says he or she is "sick"?

I certainly think my child deserves such protection and if someone preys upon my child, that monster had better hope the law gets 'im before I do.

Good lord you sound like a conservative. Are you from the Middle states?

It's a human nature to want to forgive. I believe the bible tells us to hate the sin and love the sinner.

Though I certainly do agree with most of what you are saying, the fact of the matter is that most states are economically incapable of jailing so many people for life.

It puts a great strain on the prisons and would skyrocket taxes. Compared to the other criminals out there, the child molesters probably aren't in our top concerns. As harsh as it may sound, we want to protect our own skins.

Though it certainly sounds very nice, keeping so many people for life would completely financially cripple our country.

Nice talking; even if you are a bit idealistic. I still feel that child molestation is petty compared to the atrocities that occur on a daily basis in Africa.

Just my two cents.

If kidnapping a child does not warrant a life sentence, I don't know what would.

I would make an exception for the child abductions that turn out to be the non-custodial divorced parent who just wants to see his kid and is being shut out by his ex-spouse. It is tragic when the kids are used by one ex-spouse to hurt the other. In that situation, the child is generally not endangered.

Yes, you are right but nowadays so many organizations fight for scum like these. They make money off them and as we are all finding out, money is becoming more important than things like protecting our children.

How many things like baseball stadiums are being built with government money while things like libraries shut down left and right and schools have to scavenge for money. 'tis truly sad times we all live in and unfortunately the age of chivalry is over when someone would actually step up to help those in need.

Well I know you were looking for debate but the truth is I 100% agree my husband and I talk about it ourselves and we both have said that for a long time if your a sex offender you should get life, why do we have to live in our communities and our neighboorhoods even with these people who are putting our children at risk it's not fair to our children.

I will only add one consideration you have not mentioned;
the cost of keeping people in prison; who will pay, who is willing to pay? prisons are overcrowded as it is. and voters don't seem to want to pay more. there are also impacts on the family of those incarcerated (for example if the person is the breadwinner). just things to consider. i don't necessarily disagree with you. but why not a life sentence for every crime?
people know not to do robbery, murder, rape, etc.
