Two spares are enough. You drive for 6000 miles, and replace 2 tires with new ones, saving the half worn tires as spares, and drive an additional 6000 miles. By then, 2 tires are completely worn out, but the original spares are only half worn, You replace the completely worn tires with the ones that are half worn, and have thus 4 tires with 6000 miles left in them. You drive the last 6000 miles on those. Total trip: 18000 miles.

One - the likelihood of having two failures at any one time and not being able to make it to a place to get another tire is not very likely.

If there was any need to carry two spares, then the actual consideration should be to go ahead and replace one pair of tires, preferably the pair attached to the driving axle, be it front wheel drive or rear wheel drive.

Dude you only need one spare tire just keep getting the flat fixed and then it becomes the spare. Be sure and check the air pressure in the spare.
