Keeping them dry will prevent the algae from growing. A mild bleach and water solution will kill it.

The Oaks deserves the 10 points.

The flags are damp/shaded for a lot of the time I guess. A jet washer will remove it. Alternatively, wash with a bleach or herbicide solution. I know of no way to stop it coming back

I hope you are talking about flagstone. If so use a solution of bleach water to control the algae. If you spray the solution routinely this will help control it. Nothing will stop it because moisture causes it.

Dampness. Some flagstones retain moisture. Its the time of year unfortunately.I use Jeyes Fluid. Give them a good scrub with it. It clears it,but the damper the weather, the more it will build up again. What we need is some sunshine to kill of the spores!!!

Basically, the answers to your questions are :
1. Because its winter in the UK and this is the same as moss in your lawn and invariably happens.
2. High pressure water blaster will shift it - hire one.
3. Put algaecide in the water when blasting.

Speak to your local garden centre for advice on what to use, you don't want to kill the lawn off too.

Do you mean the flagtstones? Normally you want them to grow algae because it keeps grasses from growing between them.
