UC is a state college.

Going to a JC/CC and then transferring to a UC is common. If you're doing it to save money, it's a perfectly good reason. If you've been accepted into a school like Berkeley, UCLA or UCSD, you may want to think twice about turning it down and going the JC route. You're not THAT much in debt by going an extra two years. May not be worth the risk of you not getting in again.

Don't try for a Cal State and then transfer to a UC. That's hard, as are UC to UC transfers.

UC=University of California, right?

The UC system has a GREAT program for transferring from community colleges. I would look into it very, very seriously if money is an issue for you. You can take community college classes in California for $17 a class- INCREDIBLY cheap! (fees just went down recently)

I don't know if it's "better" per se, either way- you may miss out on some of the social aspects of spending your freshman year at the UC school, living on campus, etc, but if you transfer in, you will get the same diploma that everyone else does for a lot less money.

Going the community college/UC transfer route is VERY common. The local community college will probably have a specific office or person who deals just with UC and Cal State transfers; I would talk to that person at different places, and pick the local school that has the highest percentage of successful UC transfers. Good luck!

Try to get directly into UC. They have financial packages. There is a UC attitude that is better to start off with. I would alternately go Uof I until graduating and if thinking about an MS or PHd re-apply to UC or somewhere else that your experience tells you might be better suited to your interests.

If you can get into one of the better UC schools, then I suggest going directly in, but its not necessary.
