My partner and i are moving to the city!! but we have no idea about which suburbs are good etc. and when i say good i mean safe lol...

You need to give more information about what you're looking for in a suburb. Like, do you want an apartment or a freestanding house, do you have a dog, do you have kids, do you want to be near public transport, bars, cafes, parks. And some idea about your price range would be helpful as well.
A lot of suburbs in Melbourne tend to draw a particular demographic or population, like young singles, professionals, families etc.
I think Port Melbourne is a great place to live. It's close to the city, on the beach, lots of cute restaurants and bars, great apartments and it's mostly young professionals living there. But it's a little bit pricey...
