when I went to the mechanic he told me that i need to replace The EGR Valve. My friend told me if the EGR valve is not function or something wrong with it the check engine light will be on. My check engine light is not on? does that mean the egr valve is working fine?

Your check engine light will probably be on, but the computer may be sending a fault code that has not triggered the light to come on yet. Ask the mechanic how he diagnosed the problem. It is probably just a computer code indicating the EGR system, which is comprised of several sensors and parts. The EGR is the most likely and, coincidentally, probably the most expensive to replace. That may not fix your problem. Make sure that the mechanic diagnoses and FIXES your problem and does not just start replacing parts. That will get expensive quick.

Im driving a 1997 Toyota rav 4 and just HAD to replace the EGR valve..,.BEACUSE the check engine light was on and i needed to pass inspection! I was told its involved with emissions only and really not integral to driving at all....but of course, to pass inspection...

need more info. are you trying to pass inspection ,is the car not idiling right, cutting off,sputtering, what's wrong with it?
