im half black and half white, so as a result, i am light skin. i have black friends and some tell me they wish they were light like me. i dont even like being this light. i like the sun cuz it gives me a tan. i prefer to be brown skin. its beautiful to me. there's nothing wrong with light, but why be light if you're brown or black. i look in the mirror everyday and wonder why i cant be darker. when i was younger, my brown skinned friends tells all of us not to put on baby oil before going in the sun because it would darken our skins. i didnt know how true that was, but i started doing that everyday and i still do it up to this point. i dred the winter because its hard to get sun.
i still wonder what's so good about light skin. im not criticizing light skin. its nice too, but in my opinion, i prefer the tanner and brown look. why do some black women want to be light. its not that great. ppl like me have to worry more about skin cancer. i wish i didnt have to worry about that.

As people we all have desires to be like something else. It's human nature. But one has to learn that you are who you are, and love yourself the best you can. You should love your light skin. You asked why do girls who have dark skin desire to be light when you yourself desire to be dark. Perhaps they wish to be lighter just as you want to be darker. Just like thick people may wish to be skinnier. Or how short people may wish to be taller. Trust me life would be easier if you cast your insecurities aside. Put away your baby oil and embrace your beauty. Tell your friends to do the same.

Sweetie, it's really a good thing that you came out and asked this question. I see questions posted in the beauty and style section all the time from black women and girls asking how can they lighten their skin, and what creams to use and so on..... I can never understand why anybody would want to lighten their skin. It's like they seem to be ashamed of their skin color. I wish these people could see that having these different shades of colors is what makes us all so unique. If we were all one color this world would sure be a boring place. I think they feel like lighter people look better and the color looks better, but that isn't true at all. I'm a black female, and I'm a light tan brown. I love my skin tone, but guess what??? If I was lighter or darker I would still be proud of my color. I feel sorry for these people because their worrying about the wrong things. There is more to life then worrying about how dark or light your skin is. We should love the skin were in, and never be ashamed of it.

Because the white elite, the wealthy upper class and the media all came together and decided to wipe out the black community. When they realized it wasn't working, because the black male and female were linked by the tightest chains, they looked closer and realized that the strongest force among blacks were their family units. That's when women like Halle Berry (who was the mistress (not wife) of so many men on TV it wasn't funny) and others who decided to sell their souls to sell black people this horrible image of themselves came into the picture. They did such a good job that men and women all over the nation actually BELIEVE that lighter skin is better than darker skin. That's funny, seeing that lighter skin comes from being mixed. And if you only think that lighter skin is better, it is obvious that you hate your OWN skin color and have low self esteem issues. As for Munroe and Ms. Hong Kong...did you know that that refrigerator, the vacuum cleaner, the brakes on a train and even soap, were all created by black people? Oh, and NEWS FLASH we have a black president, first lady, two black female senators and 1 black male senator.

Putting treated oil on your skin will guard against getting skin cancer and you were asked to believe that it didn't help? Thats the power of propaganda, someone takes honest information and casts suspicion on it. The solution is to create trusts that are based in staying away from vanity, what works good rather then what just looks good. Of course this is logic and ...

I couldn't ever trade in my dark skin for any light complexion. Black women really need to see how beautiful they are. The night is just as beautiful as the day. It's just that at night no wants to give time to notice, and those who do are always in awe. I am blessed to have dark skin.

I find dark brown skin to be really attractive too. But women always have complaints about themselves. Pale skinned women tan... darker women bleach ~ we are all beautiful. And we should embrace our own beauty rather than trying to be something different.

Well, that's YOUR opinion. Just like how your friends have a preference for lighter skin, YOU have a preference for darker skin. Why do some white girls like being darker via tans whilst other white girls like staying white...? Because they like it that way. That's just that. Difference of opinion. Who cares?

These days some people of all sizes, colors and shapes want to be like the stars, and have work done. I guess that saying, "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence," has something to it.
Seems virtually no one is completely happy with who they are and how they look. A pity.
