Actually in the Hans Christian Andersen story, the prince marries another princess which means The Little Mermaid's heart will break, and she will become foam on the crest of the waves.

On the night she was supposed to die, her sisters found her and told her they had given their hair to the sea witch and the Little Mermaid had to kill the prince before dawn and she could return to the sea. The prince loved her but had to marry another...He told her he would rather marry her.

Instead of killing him, she kissed his brow and went out to become foam on the sea, but she rose and joined the daughters of the air because she had received the love of a human.

In the original Little Mermaid, The youngest daughter of seven mermaids (unnamed) lived in an underwater castle. One day during a storm, she saves a prince. Disheveled and incoherent, the prince only remembers two things about the woman who saved him: 1) she had beautiful red hair and 2) she had an amazing voice. However, he doesn't get much more than that because the young mermaid dives back into the ocean before she can be identified as a mermaid. Later, she admits she loves the prince and visits a sea witch who says in return for her voice, she'll give the mermaid legs. However, her feet will always feel like knives are piercing her soles when she walks and she won't be able to talk. Driven by mad love she agrees. The prince sees her and takes her in, enthralled by her beautiful face. But because she can't talk, he doesn't believe she is the girl who saved him. He himself is in love with the maiden with red hair and a beautiful voice who saved him a while ago, but doesn't believe the mermaid is the one because she is mute. He one day meets another red-head with a gorgeous voice, believes her to be the one, and marries her. The mermaid is so distraught she decides to commit suicide. However, he seven sisters come up from the water with short hair and a knife. They tell her that they visited the witch who cut their hair with the knife and if the little mermaid killed the prince, she would get her fins back and be able to join her sisters. Unable to do so, the mermaid tosses the knife into the ocean and dies in the sea foam. Kind of depressing, huh?

Little Mermaid 2 should of been a divorce with 2 kids. Little Mermaid would weigh 250 pounds.

Yeah, she turns into sea foam or something. At least, that's how the Hans Christian Anderson version ends. I was depressed when I read that. Disney puts a happy spin on a lot of fairy tales that originally ended badly.

Its Andersen not Hederson, the orginal was written by Hans Christian Andersen. And yes it was a sad ending, but you know Good Old Dinsey. They have to make it a HAPPY EVER AFTER...sad doesnt sell.

nope i had no idea, but i believe that is why they call it a fairy tale. since they made it a movie for CHILDREN it would make no sense to put in the movies story line that the little mermaid died for the pain of her true love being with another woman... children just wouldnt understand...

Yes Disney does that a lot!! Pocahontas as we all know, did not end that way and what was with the second one? Swan Lake (I know not a Disney cartoon but still) doesn't end correctly to the tale. He doesn't cry over her swan form and magically she changes back to her human form. She manages to fly back to Swan Lake through the pain of her breaking heart to die..hello cartoon people have you never seen Paloma as the dieing swan?!?

I already knew that, but Disney changes a lot of the endings to classic stories because they want them to appeal more to the younger audience and not let them experience pain and hardships at that early stage in life.

Of course. Most disney movies are based on old stories or fairy tales, but instead of using the original (usually morbid, but much more interesting) storyline, they "cutsiefy" them and make them bland and crappy. Thats why disney sucks.
