I once heard a college professor talk about Star Trek.
He said that the future would PROBABLY NOT be like on Star Trek. For one reason; people.
He said that it is very complex to send people into space. Robots can do the same thing as people. And a bonus; if a robot crashes, who cares? If you crash the Enterprise and 1,400 people die; then everyone would be outraged.

He also felt that the human body would "evolve" into a cyborg with most of the parts replaced with different manufactured parts. This is how we will live longer and be without disease or pain.

He did not think robots would replace us. But rather be part of our world, as equals. Because we will - literally - be robots with souls.

What do you think?

Your professor's remarks sound very logical. Another preventative factor in regard to space travel is distances which are measured in light years! Unless the laws of physics can somehow be circumvented, it is not possible for matter to travel faster than the speed of light (186,000 miles per second), and quite clearly it will be a very long time before we build a space vehicle which can travel at a speed approaching that limit. Assuming that we desire space travel in order to meet other similar beings inhabiting our universe, there are none in our solar system, and the nearest star with a planetary system (which may not possess any inhabitable planets) is prohibitively far away. Unless we are to discover the secret of immortality or those of science fiction (such as cryogenics), we would never survive the millions of years required to cover the vast distances of space. Of course, if you believe in UFOs, those aliens have managed to overcome the laws of physics! If we could ever have a genuine normal conversation with anyone (sans abduction), perhaps we might persuade them to reveal their marvelous mysteries!

The technology we have now was not imaginable a few decades back. For the egg head to refute possibilities shown on Star Trek (which by the way are advised by scientists) and put forth his own version shows he is closed minded. In fact what he said had already been shown in the old Star Trek shows with William Shatner.

In my opinion anything you can imagine about the future probably will happen.
