We have already removed the trees to allow more sunlight and I was told bleach will cause damage to the asphalt shingles.

I would first try bleach and water. Mix equal parts and use a hand pump sprayer with a mist spray. I would spray the area enought to make it damp. Let the sun work on it a couple of days and if looks like it is killing the mold and moss do it again. The hotter the day the better. I really don't think that diluting the bleach will harm the shingles. If you want you could use 2/3 water and1/3 bleach to start off with.

I've used bleach and no damage, but the results with moss was limited. I have been told that a zinc strip put on the roof will kill and keep moss away.

I used a snow rake to scrape the moss off after Chlorine treatment then I hosed to roof with water and then used a herbicide.

Careful using the herbicide, when it washes off it ,may kill plants at the base of your house.

I have heard of using a copper or brass strip at the peak of the roof to keep mold and moss at bay. I have never had to confirm it but having grown up in New England, my neighbors swore by it.

From British Columbia rainforest comes a recommended CMHC solution. 'Zinc Powder' or 'Moss Killer' and used after a rain while the roof is still damp.

A strip of copper or zinc at the peak of the roof will kill anything growing on it. Both are toxic to plant life.
