that how everything was made in the olden days..
it is so when you have to go out to the outhouse in the cold weather, you do not have to pull your pant down before you sit so you do not get cold...

they are used mostly to put your wallet in. mostly guys do this, being that most girls have a purse.
i chose not to cause when i sit i dont want to sit on it. and my pda has attached wallet and belt clip
reall you can put anything in it.
